Wardrobe: Wear what you think you like best and bring 2 alternate choices. Contrary to popular belief, there are no absolutes when selecting wardrobe for portraits. Feel free to bring anything you feel looks good on you. If you feel good in what you are wearing, you will exude confidence that will come through. In general, solids are better than patterns. V-necks are better than scoop necks for women. Long sleeves are better than short sleeves. Black is always great. Simple is better. Jewelry is best simple unless your style is flashy and it is a signature for you.
Best attire for business headshots:
Men – Dark, solid jackets with a colored shirt and a colorful tie seem to make the best shots. Alternatively, a coat and dress shirt, no tie is also a great look.
Women – Dark, solid colors are the way to go. Alternatively rich colored wardrobe will also pop. Please avoid pastels or colors that wash out unless you pair it with a dark jacket, sweater, or scarf. EXCEPTION: A white or cream suit can look really great.
Clothes to avoid:
- Busy patterns or plaids
- Sleeveless or short-sleeved shirts
- Turtlenecks
- Shiny fabrics such as silk
- White shirts (ok under a dark jacket)
Grooming
Please arrive camera ready. You should wear your hair and makeup the way you would when you are trying to look spiffy. Don’t over-do it, but feel pretty. It’s a good idea to have powder and your favorite lipstick with you. I have a dressing area for you hang your clothes, a mirror, hair styling tools and product and even a little makeup for touch ups.
If you would like a professional to touch you up before your session, you can schedule an appointment with BANG Salon and Day Spa (located just 3 miles from the studio). I have arranged for my clients to receive a $40 pre-photo service to make sure your hair and makeup are “picture perfect.” Contact BANG directly at 512-514-1141.
Glasses – If you wear glasses everyday, you should wear them in the photo. Just note, it is difficult to avoid glare in the lenses. If you can have the lenses removed prior to the session, you will have the best results or consider asking your optometrist for a loaner pair.
Facial Hair – If you wear facial hair, make sure it is well-groomed. The rest of your face should be fresh-shaven. Your session includes basic retouching and that does not include razor stubble. I do have a razor at the studio if you need to shave immediately before the shoot.
Nails – Your hands may or may not show in the photo but be prepared with clean nails. Polished or unpolished is fine, just not dirty or chipped.
Hair – Aside from the styling on the day of the session, please make sure your haircut is the way you like it and that your hair color is at its best including your roots.
Skincare – Avoid tan lines or sunburns. Blemishes are easily retouched, so don’t worry about those.
Most important thing to remember:
Relax! This is going to be fun!
